Laura Crawford of Mama Bamboo, an early Bamboo Village partner, on their sustainability journey.

Mama Bamboo, one of Bamboo Village's first partners, is a brand specializing in eco-friendly diapers and wipes. Driven by a desire to revolutionize the diaper industry and advocate for sustainability, Mama Bamboo is the first European B-Corp certified diaper company. We recently had a pleasant conversation with Laura Crawford, founder and CEO of Mama Bamboo, to learn more about their sustainability journey, achievements, obstacles, and future endeavors.
Of course! Mama Bamboo is a B-Corp certified brand of eco-diapers and wipes. Our core mission is to reduce the use of plastic and chemicals in the production of diapers and wipes and to provide a sustainable end-of-life solution for all users. We have developed eco-friendly diapers and wipes that stand out from conventional options by using plant-based materials—bamboo, to be precise—for both the product and the packaging. Our production processes are heavily focused on improved sustainability; preserving soil, water, and carbon is essential. We carefully monitor our carbon footprint and offset this impact by partnering with Bamboo Village. This aligns perfectly with our ethos of incorporating bamboo into our products while simultaneously supporting bamboo reforestation projects.

My introduction to bamboo actually came through a friend of mine living in Singapore. I remember complaining to her about the state of diapers in the UK, and she suggested I consider bamboo. She told me about how bamboo has long been used in Asia for various products, including diapers and textiles. Intrigued, I embarked on several months of research and discovered the potential to use bamboo to create a product that is significantly less harmful to the environment. After seeing the extensive application of bamboo in the Asian market, where it thrives abundantly without the need for pesticides, fertilizers, or irrigation, I asked myself: why aren't we all embracing this remarkable plant?
We came across Bamboo Village about five years ago while we were actively looking for carbon offset projects. It was actually a stroke of luck. During our research, Bamboo Village caught our attention as a perfect match for our sustainability goals. Since then, we have been offsetting our carbon emissions with Bamboo Village every year, and we plan to continue doing so. What is great is the synergy between our use of bamboo in our products and Bamboo Village's mission to promote carbon removal and environmental conservation through bamboo cultivation. Partnering with an initiative that promotes bamboo as a sustainable solution aligns with our own values, and we look forward to continuing this collaborative journey toward a greener future.
Our immediate focus is on conducting a full life cycle assessment (LCA) for our products. Currently, our emphasis is on analyzing greenhouse gas emissions, but we want to expand this to all environmental aspects of our products' life cycles, starting with our main items: diapers and wipes.
As we continue to expand our range, we have introduced Bamboo BabyGrows and started producing bamboo wood products such as hairbrushes and toothbrushes. In addition, we are excited to announce the launch of a new range of bamboo baby care products this summer. This collection will include shampoo, baby wash, and lotions, all enriched with bamboo extracts. These products are vegan and organic and feature fully circular and refillable bottles, with a focus on sustainability. Notably, we have also entered into a partnership with Big Green Smiles, a green marketplace in Europe, which is our first step toward retail outside the UK.

Our efforts to reduce emissions have been multifaceted. First of all, we have switched to using 50% solar energy for our diaper production, which has significantly reduced the carbon footprint of our production processes. Similarly, for our wipes, we have switched to a factory that operates on 60% solar energy, further minimizing our production impact.
We have also implemented a more efficient approach to freight logistics. Instead of traditional palletized freight, we have switched to loose loading. Upon arrival in the UK, we then place the products onto pallets. This adjustment has allowed us to optimize space, resulting in a 40% increase in product capacity per shipment. Ultimately, these measures have helped us significantly reduce our shipping-related carbon footprint.
Delivery logistics within the UK were a challenge. Initially, we used an all-electric courier service. However, when it became clear that the costs of this eco-friendly option were becoming too high for many customers, we made the difficult decision to switch to conventional couriers for the majority of our deliveries. While this change helped alleviate immediate financial barriers for customers, it also led to an increase in our carbon footprint within the UK, which is less than ideal.
Despite this shift, we continue to offer green delivery options on our website, giving customers the choice to prioritize sustainability if they are willing to pay the extra cost. Balancing environmental goals with practical considerations remains an ongoing challenge for us.
Concluding our conversation with Laura, it is clear that sustainability is not just a trend for their brand—it is a guiding principle deeply embedded in their operations.
From the use of bamboo in eco-friendly diapers and wipes to their partnership with Bamboo Village to offset carbon emissions, Mama Bamboo is at the forefront of sustainable innovation in the industry.
